COVID-19 Can Cause Erectile Dysfunction and Other Male Health Issues
Research has found that men are hit harder by COVID-19 and that the coronavirus can cause health issues specific to men, such as erectile dysfunction.
Women have often joked about the “man flu” and how men seem to complain more when they are sick than women do.
However, studies have found that when it comes to COVID-19, men really do suffer more than their female counterparts, and it is no laughing matter.
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the virus has taken a harder toll on men. Data collected in China as early as January of 2020 found that men were being infected at higher rates.
As the virus spread across Europe in early March, deaths were consistently higher among men. In March 2020, men accounted for 70% of all COVID-19 deaths in Italy. When the virus made its way into the United States, the pattern persisted.
While there are, of course, behavioral differences that could account in part for the differential, there is also a physiological reason. Biologically speaking, the male immune system is less equipped to fight off viruses than the female immune system.
The X chromosome contains a high number of immune-related genes, and because females have two X chromosomes while males have only one, their immune system is better equipped to fight off infections like the coronavirus.
In addition to being more susceptible to getting a more severe case of COVID, researchers have also found that there is a link between a coronavirus infection and some conditions that specifically affect males, such as erectile dysfunction.
A recent study out of Rome found that men – even young men – who had been infected with the coronavirus were three times more likely to suffer from ED than men in the same age range who did not have COVID-19.
Doctors at the University of Rome found that 28% of men with an average age of 33 who had COVID-19 said they were experiencing erectile dysfunction. According to the Daily Mail, only 9 of the 100 men surveyed who did not have COVID-19 reported problems with sexual function.
The researchers said that ED likely occurs because of inflammation caused by the virus that narrows the blood vessels leading to the genitals. This obstructs the blood flow and hinders sexual response.
Another reason why men experience ED from COVID-19 is that the virus responsible for the illness binds to ACE2 receptors in the body. That is how it gains entry to our cells.
“One of the devious ways the virus gets into the body is by its spike protein binding to a receptor found at quite high concentrations not only in the lungs but also in the reproductive organs,” said Dr. Channa Jayasena, a consultant in reproductive endocrinology and andrology at Hammersmith and St. Mary’s hospitals in London. “When COVID-19 binds to these receptors, they can no longer perform in their normal function.”
What Every Man Should Know About Treating Erectile Dysfunction
Of course, the idea that COVID-19 can possibly lead to ED and other problems specific to males is not the only reason for all men to do their best to avoid the deadly disease.
But it is something that is worthwhile knowing.
Another thing that was quite interesting about the Rome study is that it said that the reason why COVID-19 can lead to ED is that it damages the vessels that provide good blood flow to the penis.
