PRP Can Be Used to Improve Joint Health and So Much More
Studies have found that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an effective treatment for osteoarthritis.
At the most recent OARSI World Congress it was suggested that intraarticular injections of platelet-rich plasma or PRP should be considered an effective treatment for pain and inflammation for patients with osteoarthritis.
Dr. Chu went on to say that she has found that the use of “intraarticular injections of platelet-rich plasma or cell therapies could yield improved outcomes over traditional modalities.”
Chu went on to point out that over the past decade or so, a number of clinical trials have shown that PRP injections can be highly effective in treating osteoarthritis, particularly with regard to pain relief.
Disease-modifying drugs for symptomatic, radiographic OA remain lacking,” Constance R. Chu, MD, FAAOS, FAOA, professor, and vice-chair of research in the department of orthopedic surgery at Stanford University, said in her presentation. “Current injection therapies are, at best, palliative.
One such study was published by Chu’s group in the Journal of Orthopedic Research.
Her findings showed that platelet-rich plasma injections yielded improvements in Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) pain, stiffness, and function. She said that some patients showed “as much as a 20-point improvement in WOMAC pain.”
She went on to say that patients who did show improvement in WOMAC parameters demonstrated improved gait and were able to load their joints after PRP injections.
It rebuts the idea that it is just a placebo effect,” Chu said. “These data highlight that treating pain and function is not enough.
Chu said another point of her research is that it suggests that PRP can be most effective in treating people who have sustained joint injuries but have not yet had such injuries evolve into osteoarthritis.
For example, she says that PRP injections may be beneficial in those who have torn an anterior cruciate ligament and, therefore, have a strong likelihood of developing OA.
“This is the future of [PRP] injections,” Chu said, describing formulations that are “personalized and adaptable” to individual patients and their joints. “This is not as foreign or radical as it may seem. There is definitely a future for intraarticular injections in knee OA prevention. Treating pain and symptoms alone is not enough.”
What Everyone Needs to Know About the Restorative Powers of PRP!
It is encouraging that mainstream medical researchers like Dr. Chu are finding out what our antiaging doctors have known about the effectiveness of PRP for a long time.
Platelet-rich plasma has become one of the most powerful tools we have to help our patients look and feel younger.
PRP was first used to relieve joint pain effectively and to speed up the healing of sports-related injuries.
Soon after that, those of us in the age-management field found how this incredible, all-natural healing agent could be used to restore aging skin, to rejuvenate sexual health, and we are now using PRP for hair restoration and getting remarkable results.
At NuLife Institute, our goal is to seek out and put into practice the latest advances in rejuvenative medicine to keep our patients looking and feeling their absolute best!
As opposed to most other treatments for joint pain, PRP:
- Is drug-free and surgery-free
- Is a simple in-office procedure, with each treatment taking only an hour or so.
- Provides thicker pain relief, reduces inflammation, and improves mobility by using stem cell technology to repair joint tissue!
PRP can help you to get back the self-confidence that comes with more mobility!
Our medical director, Dr. Luis Dominguez, has used his unique, customized approach to help thousands of patients reverse the clock on aging and enjoy a whole new lease on life.
Dr. Luis Dominguez has applied his inquisitive mind and passion for evidence-based Integrative Medicine to focus on utilizing a whole-body approach that provides life-changing results.
“I tore my ACL years ago in a skiing accident. That was in my 20s. Now, in my fifties, I have been dealing almost daily with knee pain and stiffness. I thought my only solution was going to painful and invasive knee replacement surgery. I dreaded the thought of that! But, instead, I have been getting PRP shots from NuLife, and I am jogging, biking, and getting around better than ever! Thank you, NuLife!”
